The Spotted Wood Owl is a richly coloured medium-sized owl with a large rounded head, no ear-tufts and dark eyes. Its three subspecies are found in Southern Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malay Peninsula and Central Sumatra among others. It grows to a length of about 44 - 48cm (17 - 19 in) with a wing length of 30 - 36cm (12 - 14 in). This species of owl usually resides in lowland forest, mangrove swamps, cleared woodland and plantations. It feeds mainly on mice and rats and occasionally on insects and small birds.
