But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.' For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." (Matthew 9:12-13, ESV)

Jesus is collecting His chosen disciples and one of them is Matthew, a tax collector. Tax collectors weren't the most popular people; in fact they were hated and despised as thieves and collaborators with the Roman occupation.

But when Jesus calls, Matthew drops it all to follow Him. And he does what we need to do when Jesus comes into our lives: He invites others to meet Jesus too. In fact, he throws a party!

Then along comes the old fly in the ointment. The Pharisees and religious leaders get wind of it and come to criticize Jesus for eating with "such scum."

Jesus responds with His own question about who needs a doctor more. Those who are sick? Or those who are healthy?

That's a critical question because, you see, Jesus came for us when we were sick and dying in our sin. He didn't say "Clean up first" or "When you're doing better at not sinning, then I'll save you." He says "Come to me, I'll make you well."

We tend to think we have to "do" something or earn something or even reach a certain level of righteousness to qualify for the salvation that Jesus offers. Or we think we're not "good enough," that our past, our baggage, our sin and failures and mistakes mean that He'll never even look at us.

Yet all that baggage is exactly why Jesus came. He wants to offer us healing for our spiritual sickness and to restore us to a healthy relationship with God.

Jesus is the doctor you and I need--the One who is the cure for our spiritual condition.

I can't give solutions to all of life's problems, doubts, or fears.
But I can listen to you, and together we will search for answers.

I can't change your past with all it's heartache and pain,
nor the future with its untold stories.
But I can be there now when you need me to care.

I can't keep your feet from stumbling.
I can only offer my hand that you may grasp it and not fall.
Your joys, triumphs, successes, and happiness are not mine;
Yet I can share in your laughter.

Your decisions in life are not mine to make, nor to judge;
I can only support you, encourage you,
and help you when you ask.

I can't prevent you from falling away from friendship,
from your values, from me.
I can only pray for you, talk to you and wait for you.

I can't give you boundaries which I have determined for you,
But I can give you the room to change, room to grow,
room to be yourself.

I can't keep your heart from breaking and hurting,
But I can cry with you and help you pick up the pieces
and put them back in place.

I can't tell you who you are.
I can only love you and be your friend.
