Introduction:
Hello! My name is Wally and I'm setting this up to help my mom get back on the road. She is hdtequilamama aka Phoenix. Or Jules. Please bear with me as I introduce you to her so you can see why this is so important to me.
A lot of you know my mom but for those that don't, you need to. She grew up riding but gave it up when she got married and started a family. Jules is a giving person who taught me, my brother and sister to share, no matter how little you may have, with others. She also taught us to give of ourselves, our time or whatever we had to help others.
My mom and dad worked very hard but always put us kids first. Mom even drove a school bus for many years so she could have an income but also be home with us when we weren't in school. She gave up a lot financially so she could be there for us. Over the years she opened our home to several of our friends who needed refuge from less than ideal home situations. Even though she struggled to make ends meet she always made room to help someone else.
In 2000 my dad died after more than 2 years of battling cancer. They had been married for 20 years and mom was devastated but stayed strong for us. (We were a VERY close family and she knew we needed her.)
In 2005 we relocated to AL and mom finally began dating and riding again. She met Alvin in early 2006 and they bought their bikes within days of each other. On May 11, 2006 Jules had a bike wreck that even the doctors said should have killed her. But my mom always says, "What doesn't kill me only makes me stronger!" Even in the ER she talked about riding again as soon as she got better. After several surgeries and a lot of therapy though she lost the nerve in her left lower back and left leg. She couldn't work but Uncle Sam said she wasn't disabled and she had to fight to try and get her disability.
In December 2007, while still waiting to be approved for her disability, my mom became very sick. She went to the ER and they diagnosed her with Stage IV Colon Cancer. One doctor gave her 6 months to live. Her response was, "How do we fix it?" She's had multiple surgeries, various chemo treatments and a lot of suffering. However, at her last doctor visit she was told that her cancer numbers had gone from 389 in mid 2008 to 49 earlier this year and now at 3. That's very good because it means she's overcoming the cancer.
Even through all this, she continues to help others. She has helped to put on several charity rides, she drives her van and follows us on benefit runs, and participates in toy runs (in her van). She is a member of Soldiers' Angels helping families of our troops. She is also a member of PGR but has not been able to participate as she would like.
Now that you know a lot of my mom's struggles, let me tell you about her dream. She wants to RIDE. It's the first thing she thinks about in the morning and one of the last things she thinks about at night. She's saved money to get a bike she can ride (i.e. trike, conversion kit, sidecar) and each time something happens that she has to use her money. (The latest being my sister has been diagnosed with MS and needing help.) Being on disability makes it very hard for her to save the money as well.
When we first mentioned having a run to help raise the money for her ride she didn't want to do it. She said that there are many organizations and individuals who need charity runs to help them survive and she didn't want to take away from that. After a lot of discussion she said OK. Now it's time...
She isn't looking for a $30,000 ride. Jules has done a lot of research and has found several viable options for her to be able to ride again. The estimate is between $4,000 and $5,000 to get her on the road again. Any money raised over what the cost of her ride will cost will be given to charity. (Probably split between Soldiers' Angels, B.A.C.A. and the MS Society. Three groups very close to my mother's heart.) She doesn't want to benefit in anyway except to get a ride.
In the next month or so we will be announcing the details of the ride. It will be called...Ride so Julia Can Ride Again.
