Introduction:
OUR MISSION
Riding With Angels Inc has as it’s goal, to help as many families as we can with financial assistance for the cost of funeral expenses when the loss of a loved one is the direct result of a motorcycle accident. Along with immediate funeral expenses, Riding With Angels, as part of its long term goal agenda, will seek to provide the children of families who have suffered parental loss, with educational funds through trusts set up for that purpose.
OUR PURPOSE
Statistics show over 600,900 riders in Florida alone. Of these, statistics show a death rate of 49.5 deaths per 10,000 registered motorcyclists. Many of these bikers do not have life insurance. Because of these and similar statistics throughout our country, Riding With Angels purposes to come alongside families during their time of financial need, and to help guide them through this expense laden period when they find themselves with no visible means of the extra support they need. Our ability to do this will come through various means, notwithstanding our own efforts to raise funds through local events and fundraising drives. Without corporate sponsors, this organization would not be able to offer the full support and assistance needed for the families left behind. We will actively pursue corporate sponsorship and donors through direct marketing, and, major fund raising events throughout the State of Florida to begin, with plans to venture out to other States as the organization grows. Riding With Angels and its’ sponsors will make a difference in these families lives.
Riding With Angels, along with its’ Board of Directors will then assess each accident loss, and the family’s need based circumstances through an application process to determine qualification. Once qualified, monies will be dispersed to creditors of substantiated debts. Riding With Angels endeavors to network with the medical and bereavement community in a referral process throughout geographic areas that we reach. This will streamline our efforts and interactions with families during a time in their lives when there is much pain and confusion.

About Me:
“Riding With Angels” was created in memory of my son, Nelson Slone, who was killed in a motorcycle accident on January 1st, 2005. Before I explain how our organization works and how it began, I would like to share with you a little about my son. Nelson was a free spirited soul. Even though he was adorned in colorful tattoos and unusual piercings, his tough exterior couldn’t hide the big teddy bear inside. He would always say “I love you” before hanging up the phone, and never left without giving you a hug. Nelson and I were always together, whether at my home, or working together in my janitorial service. We would love to watch American Choppers and dreamed of building a chopper together. Nelson’s Anniversary Edition Harley-Davidson motorcycle was his pride and joy. He was always seen out riding around, enjoying the open road. When Nelson died, he had been married and left behind not only his brother and sister and myself, but also his wonderful wife and a 5 year old daughter, Harmonie. We were all devastated when the phone rang that night in January of 2005.
It was the first day of the New Year, and the caller said Nelson’s wife had been rushed to Tampa General Hospital as the result of a motorcycle accident. No word was given to us on Nelson’s condition or whereabouts. I was hoping, like any mother, that he would be ok, and I would hear from him at any moment. Such a moment never came. Our search for Nelson brought us to Baptist Hospital in Plant City. Our family was called to go in and identify a body that was brought in from an accident…..we prayed it wasn’t him, but it was. The pain of losing a son is indescribable. Little did we know our tragedy would worsen while making his funeral arrangements. Being a young man of 27, life insurance was not a top priority….death seemed so many years away. The funeral costs were so much more than we anticipated and as a family, we were only able to come up with half. The morgue allowed us to keep his body there until we could come up with the rest of the money. I began to pray fervently for a way to come up with the rest of the money that was so desperately needed! The emotional impact of not being able to afford to bury a loved one is humiliating and frightening. But God answered my prayers and touched so many hearts during this time! Through the generosity of others, He provided us with the money we needed. Nelson was able to have the funeral he deserved. As a final tribute to my son, I asked all his friends and family to ride their motorcycles to the funeral. They did, and at the gravesite they circled his casket, revved their engines, and then joined one another for a long ride, this time, without Nelson. It was a beautifully touching moment for all of us.
This was the day our journey towards healing began. And, it was also when the seed of an idea, “Riding With Angels” was planted in me.
My husband, Craig, and I own “Jus Smokin”, a food vending business, where we travel to different events sharing our story, selling our delicious smoked meats and side dishes, and contributing to various causes. We were so grateful to those who helped us during the tragic event in our lives, that through our business, we are enabled to give back to others in various ways. Our first event was a Plant City Bike Fest, held in the town my son and daughter-in-law were riding to when they had their tragic accident. Shortly after Nelson’s funeral, I started to understand that God had a reason for me to go through what I did. He planted the idea of “Riding With Angels” in my heart during this time, and, He was calling me to somehow provide hope to grief stricken families who lost a loved one due to a motorcycle accident. After that, while starting our venture, my family and I participated in many charity events while searching for our own organization’s purpose. I remembered what our family went through to raise the money we needed to help bury my son. The burden of losing a loved one is difficult enough, but if there is no life insurance, savings, assets or income, the burden is even greater. Therefore, we determined the primary purpose for “Riding With Angels” would be to assist families who have experienced the loss of a loved one due to a motorcycle accident. Initially this would be the financial support needed for funeral expenses. As sponsors and contributions increase and enable our funding to expand, we would also include educational scholarships for the children in these families, especially if both parents were involved in the fatality. We will follow strict guidelines and an application process will be necessary, however, because of the nature and delicacy of the situation, we are setting our organization up to expedite this process in a very timely fashion.
We will be hosting our first major fundraising event on January 29, 30 & 31, 2010, and would like for you to join us. It will be held at the L-Cross Ranch in Okeechobee. You can visit our websites for more information, questions, comments, and/or ways to donate to us: www.ridingwithangels.org; also, www.jussmokinfl.com. We hope to see you at our fundraiser! Bring your friends & family. RV sites available but you must be self contained.
