The FCC is proud to announce that it has created a youth program called the "Junior Flywheelers" This program is free to youths. We will teach them automotive engineering skills. Over this winter we will be teaching them how to take a pile of steel and turn it into a 150-MPH dragster. This project will be based off of a 1960's Nitro coupe. We will be using a 1930 Chevrolet 2 door sedan body, The kids will chop the top so it has a 7" windshield and 5" side windows. They will learn how to design and build the chassis and suspension. Build and install the drive train. Then they will install the body shell and tin out the interior in aluminum. Then the car will be painted in pearl white with candy colored psychedelic graphics to resemble the 1960's Nitro coupe theme.

It is our plan to have the car on display at the GSTA rod & custom show in April as a club youth project in our clubs display.

By the time this project is complete the kids will have been taught every aspect of the makings of a serious fire belching bone rattling drag car.

It is our hope that after they have had a taste of this that some of them will go on to study in a branch field of engendering like so many of us have done.

All cost for this serious act of kindness have been covered by club members and club supporters. Thank you all. ..Monk..

Now back to the program:

We are serious hard core drag racers and seldom deviate away from the drag racing scene to take in random unrelated events.

Who am I? My name is Monk.

I am president of the Flywheelers Car Club and have been a member since 1974. Our club dates back to the summer of 1954 and was one of the founding 21 clubs that made up the G.S.T.A. (Gopher State Timing Association). Our association’s home drag strip was “Minnesota drag ways” Our clubs roots grew out of south Minneapolis at the High Lake Shopping Center parking lot. It was at this time we had guys attending with there hot rods and decided to form a club. We named ourselves the “FLYWHEELERS” and chose the colors black on white for our patches. The black represents the asphalt that we drag race on and the white represents the tire smoke that rolls off our drag slicks. We would meet up in the parking lot and then hit one of the restraints to have our club meetings. This worked fine until the spring of 1956 when we rented our first club house/shop where we could build our club dragsters and hold our club meetings. In 1972 the club voted in a new look and we dropped the black on white patch on denim vests and went to blue windbreakers with blue and yellow colors and a new center patch. This was done to change the look and to keep up with the rest of the clubs at the time. In 2004 it was now our 50th anniversary and we had been watching the growth of interest in Nostalgia drag racing over the last decade, so it was at this time we voted to return to our heritage and returning to our original colors and denim patch vest. Over the years many of our club members where also riding motorcycles so in the fall of 2007 we thought we would try a [MC] patch to see if it would work and if we could generate more membership interest. Well on 8-16-08 it was decided to drop the [MC] patch and just stick with our roots as a car club. You may see us riding our motorcycles with our club vests on but we are NOT! in any way representing ourselves as a Motorcycle club. We are a drag racing club that is embracing its heritage and nothing more.

We are a group of professional showmen and talented craftsmen.

I have been a hard core drag racer for most of my life. I have raced on drag strips all over this continent; I have raced in Mexico, Canada and all over the USA.

At 50 years old I still enjoy driving at speeds in excess of 200-MPH very much. My life as a drag racer had me living on the road and sleeping in a tent for most of those years but I wouldn't have traded all the excitement and backaches for anything less!

I made the decision many years ago to live the clean life, free of drugs and alcohol. It was definitely the right choice for me and it has made me a better person.

I'm just your average "Monk" that likes to get together with his friends. I always enjoy meeting new people and making new friends.

I enjoy building and working on old hot rods & old choppers. I dig the older archaic / nostalgic machines the most.

Like most people, I have a job and pay my taxes.

I also pry for a simple life free of governmental chaos and deceit. Politics suck no matter what aspect of them affects your life.
