Description: SCOTT NEEDS YOUR PRAYERS!!! On Saturday night, October 3, 2009 between 10:45 and 11:00, a middle aged woman in a cage, talking on her cell phone to her ex-husband because she was having a panic attack about the fog and going over the upcoming bridge, suddenly stopped in front of Scott, on his motorcycle traveling @ 45 mph. Scott had to have brain surgery. There was a slight improvement the following night then regression. Scott is still in critical condition, in an induced coma with little to no response when pulled out of it. He has 6 cracked ribs, no apparent response on his left side and has developed pneumonia. Scott is the owner of Anything Leather and is a staunch supporter of ABATE as well as other non-profit motorcycle organizations. He always donates gift certificates to events. Now it's time to give back to Scott by offering your prayers for him and his family, praying for recovery. Please pass this on to all your friends. Prayer is a powerful thing, regardless of who you are praying to. > ----------------------------------------------------------------------------> NEWS FLASH: YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (10/13) AN UNKNOWN PERSON, SITTING IN THE CRITICAL CARE FAMILY WAITING ROOM WAS ASKED IF THEY MINDED WATCHING THEIR THINGS, THE GIRLS TOOK THEIR PURSES AND WENT IN TO SEE SCOTT, WHEN THEY CAME OUT THE PERSON AND A LAPTOP USED TO POST UPDATES TO THE HOSPITAL SITE WERE GONE. LUCKILY THERE ARE CAMERAS IN THOSE ROOMS AND SECURITY IS ON IT....LOWLIFE MOTHER FUCKERS...THIS FAMILY HAS ENUF TO WORRY ABOUT WITHOUT FUCKIN THIEVES!---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > NEWS FLASH - OTHER: THE POLICE CALLED TO SAY THE GIRL ON THE CELL PHONE IN THE CAGE HAS BEEN TICKETED FOR INATTENTIVE DRIVING!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Some people have asked about an address and Deb doesn't mind: Scott McKinley, 5 Washington Ct., Newark, DE 19702------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >THE FAMILY APPRECIATES EVERYONE'S CONCERN BUT PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE REHABILITATION CENTER TO SEE SCOTT. I WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW WHEN HE CAN HAVE VISITORS. THANK YOU. .------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Updates will be posted in the comment section as they come in. The latest update will be posted here: LATEST UPDATE: 11/20/09 DAY 48 For several days, there was nothing new to report, hence the lack of update. Updates will be posted weekly now and today there is quite a bit to report. First a correction on walking. Scott had told Deb he walked 50 ft. three times. Deb talked to the therapist. He actually walked 50 steps. It took three times to get to 50 feet (I think that's how she said it). Still, this is progress :) Scott's trach tube has been removed. His voice sounds like the same old Scott we know and love, just a little weak, like he's got a cold. His diet has been upgraded from puree to bland. His therapies include speech, nutrition, physical, occupational, recreational and two more Deb can't remember right now. Although it takes alot out of him, Scott is now able to get in and out of his wheelchair with assistance, no longer needing to be hoisted via the sling. Scott made a Thanksgiving card for Jason the other day. He had to cut out fall leaves and color them with markers and he had to write his message and what a wonderful message he wrote to his son. This was the first time Scott used any sort of utensils and he did a pretty good job. His cutting with scissors and his handwriting were a little shaky and his spelling was a little confused, but what a great job he is doing. Scott was in the horticulture area and planted three plants. He told Deb he planted some flowers for her. Today, Scott was playing blackjack. His numbers don't always add up but when he really concentrates, he gets it. Although he still has far to go, Scott has come a long way and we are so proud of him. Oh, also, rehabs are not much different than hospitals when it come to schedules and waiting times, and because of this, Deb thinks Scott is learning patience.

LATEST UPDATE: 11/13/09 DAY 41 Scott is making great progress. On Thursday the 12th, Day 40, walking between two horizontal bars, Scott took 10 steps with assistance on each side. He was really wore out after that but what a great accomplishment. He does not like being strapped into a chair, but until he is stronger, this has to be. His trach is capped off during the day and he is talking up a storm. The trach will probably come out sometime in the next week. He obviously wants to get out of there because he called Scott Jr. over and whispered "we gotta make the great escape". Today Scott walked 50 feet, three times, in the horizontal bars with assistance. This totally wore him out but he is working hard to get better. He is doing well in all other therapies, including occupational and speech. He is in a wheelchair most of the day but is no longer being lifted from the bed to the chair with a sling. He goes to a central area for dining and is now eating pureed food. Tomorrow he will try egg salad. Scott's comprehension is great. He is now aware of the Christiana Care Updates website and the prayer chain on BON and is truly amazed and grateful for all the support.

Wythce1 ... My prayers are with Scott so he may go home soon!! Has he had Occupational Therapy, and some exercises on cognitive motor skills like hand/eye co-ordination, etc.) Just curious because you mentioned he had 7 therapists. With the miracles of modern medicine today, and everyone's prayers here, he should be home real soon from that Rehab center!

11/09/09 DAY 37 Scott was moved to a rehabilitation center on Saturday, Day 35. He arrived shortly after 11am and spent the day settling in and resting. Scott ended up pulling some of his tubes out and was made to wear mitts, which look like white boxing gloves. Deb and Meagan witnessed Scott wake up from a nap and meticulously remove one glove and then the other as he didn't know they were watching. He understands he must leave all supports in place or he will have to wear the mitts again. Since then, Scott has been working on recovery. He is wearing his own clothes now, harley t's and sweats. He has seven therapists so far, each targeting a different therapy. Progress with some things is good and others need more work, for instance Scott thought it was August and evening, not November and afternoon. They are not working on walking yet so Scott is in a wheelchair duing the day, which he does not like. He'd rather be in bed. He is tired and wanting to nap after the sessions. His trach will probably come out in the next couple weeks. In the next couple days they will put a scope in Scott's throat to see how he is healing. He is eating applesauce and pudding but is still being fed thru the stomach feeding tube. Will post another update in a few days.

LATEST UPDATE: 11/06/09 DAY 34 Scott had a really good day today. He ate a couple spoonfuls each of applesauce and pudding. This was a big step for him. He also was able to speak for brief periods today. They put a voice mechanism on his trach for about 15 minutes every 5 hours. His throat is sore but when they let him talk, he wants to tell ya everything. Scott will be moved to a rehabilitation center at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. He has a long road ahead of him but we are confident he will succeed. I will post one more update either Saturday evening or Sunday to let everyone know how his first day at rehab went and then I will only post updates every 2-3 days, informing everyone of his progress. Thank you all for your love, care, concern and prayers. It is all of this, along with Scott's strong will, that has brought us this far and we appreciate you for it.--------------------------- THE FAMILY APPRECIATES EVERYONE'S CONCERN BUT PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE REHABILITATION CENTER TO SEE SCOTT. I WILL LET EVERYONE KNOW WHEN HE CAN HAVE VISITORS. THANK YOU.

LATEST UPDATE: 11/05/09 DAY 33 Scott had a pretty good day today. He was more alert and moving all his body parts as commanded. He even smiled today. The drain tube was removed from his head (ahead of schedule) and he is off the feeding drip. Although still being fed thru the feeding tube in his stomach, he is now being given his food as meals periodically. Tomorrow Deb and Scott Jr. will be touring two rehabilitation centers and by late afternoon a choice will be made. Scott will be moved to the rehabilitation center either Friday night or Saturday morning. Deb has been instructed to pack clothing and sneakers as rehabilitation will start right away.

LATEST UPDATE: 11/04/09 DAY 32 Scott is resting today, a little out of it from yesterday's surgery but doing ok. Although he cannot talk yet he does lip sync "I love you" to Deb. When working with the physical therapist he moves his arms, legs, ankles, fingers and toes on both the right and left sides. He does have minimal movement in his left arm but that is due to a blood clot between his elbow and shoulder. The doctors say this clot should eventually disappate and be absorbed into his system. If all goes well, Scott might be moved to a rehabilitation center by the weekend.

[Image] WYTCHE1 WYTCHE1 wrote  at 11/4/2009 10:13:06 PM

LATEST UPDATE: 11/03/09 DAY 31 Scott is still working with the physical therapist and doing well, still not ready to stand but follows all other commands asked of him. Shortly before 5pm they took him up for surgery to put the bone flap back in his skull. The surgery lasted just under 3 hours. All went well. The bone fit fine and was stapled back in place. Because of this surgery he has a drain tube in his skull again. If all goes well it should maybe be removed on Friday. When Deb left Scott was still in recovery where he remained for another 2 hours.

LATEST UPDATE: 11/02/09 DAY 30 Once again Scott is doing good. Vitals are aok. Physical therapist was in this morning, had Scott sitting up on the side of his bed with his feet touching the floor. This was the most awake he has been. They asked him to try to stand up. After a try he was not having any of that. HE put his legs back up in the bed - what an accomplishment that was. Scott is not attempting to talk yet but comprehension is present. He still responds to commands and will put his hand to his head to indicate he's ready for a dose of medication for the pain in his head. Scott will be having surgery tomorrow to put the bone flap back in his skull. There is the chance it might not fit now. If that is the case they might have to use a synthetic. Hopefully all goes well with that. EVEN THOUGH SCOTT HAS BEEN MOVED TO STEP-DOWN, HE IS STILL IN THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT. DEB WOULD LIKE TO REMIND EVERYONE, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE HOSPITAL WITH THE INTENTION OF VISITING SCOTT YET. THANK YOU.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/31/09 DAY 28 Great news...Scott has been moved to a step-down unit, not out of the woods but out of the critical care of the intensive care unit. He is alert and seems to understand what is said to him but still cannot talk. He is now off the venilator and his trach tube has been capped. His temperature and vitals are good. While it is not yet gone, they have a handle on the blood infection. He moves his feet and legs as well as his right arm, which is looking good now that all the swelling has gone down. There is still much concern about his left arm. Scott has lost considerable muscle mass throughout. All in all, it was a good, positive day.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/30/09 DAY 27 Scott did much better today. He was alert, sitting up in a chair. His temperature has finally come down to normal. He understood everything Deb said to him and did not want her to leave at the end of the day.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/28/09 DAY 25 Not a whole lot of change from yesterday. Scott is very groggy, sedated on dilaudid for the pain in his head. His breathing was more labored today and he has been put back on the ventilator. The goal is to continue to try to wean him off of that.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/27/09 DAY 24 The body temp is normal. All vitals are good. Scott is still on strong antibiotics and pain meds but has come off the ventilator and is pretty much breathing on his own. He is trying to talk like crazy but no sounds come out. He is very frustrated with that. Will be starting to work with physical therapist soon. They put him in the chair with a helmet on today for 2-1/2 hours. He didn't like that too much but he's behaving himself.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/26/09 DAY 23 Scott had another good day. Vitals continue to improve. He has now developed a urinary tract infection but is being treated for that. His breathing is much improved. He is still on the respirator but doing the work himself. Scott reached up to touch his moustache today. He appears to have great range of movement on his right side. He continues to squeeze Deb's hand with his left hand and moves his left foot. Scott is trying to talk and gets frustrated when he can't but this will not change until the trach tube is removed.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/23/09 DAY 20 Scott had a rough day. He has a blood infection. His fever is still around 103. They put cooling blanket both over and under him. They had to put a new line in his jugular and have stopped with the feeding tube. His breathing is very difficult. They will be trying to control this by swapping out different types of machines. Scott also has a blood clot in his arm between his elbow and shoulder, hence the difficulty moving his arm.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/22/09 DAY 19 Scott is not doing so well today. His fever rose to 105. By the time Debbie left tonight it was only down to 103. Scott was non-responsive today. He did not respond to any commands. All we can do is pray for a better day tomorrow.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/21/09 DAY 18 There's not a whole lot to report today. There is still the flucuation of his temperature. While it could be caused by the pneumonia, they're thinking it might be neurological. His temperature seems to spike more in the morning and afternoon then drops to around 99.5-99.9 in the evening. Scott was in a chair again today. Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful day.

Prayers going out to Scott and all those who know and love him. Nice to see the person who hit him got ticketed, but I sure do wish it could be more. Sadly, that's the extent of the law. My advice, get involved with your local MRO, such as ABATE, and start writing your local lawmakers. Insist on immediate investigation of cell phone records in the course of any accident investigation. Cell phone usage, especially texting, have been conclusively shown to be as debilitating as driving while intoxicated, and the penalties should be comparable, where an accident involving injury or fatality occurs as a result. Oh, and don't let them feed you any BS about helmet use either.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/19/09 DAY 16 Scott had a procedure today to insert a filter in his groin to prevent any blood clots from moving upward. He resumed feeding through the tube in his stomach now that the bleeding has stopped. Approximately 74 stitches were removed from his head today. His vitals were good and his temperature has come down to 99.9, however, when Debbie left tonight she said he appeared to be sweating. Scott was pretty much out of it today due to the Procedure.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/18/09 DAY 15 Scott is doing pretty good today. His vitals are good and his temperature is slowly returning to normal. He wiggled his toes on his left foot and tried to raise his left arm. He really likes those pink sponge lollipops. He is alert and appears to understand things he is being told. Debbie mentioned people from 16 years ago and asked if he remembered them. He shook his head yes. He cannot yet talk although we think he is trying to. He wanted Debbie to stay with him so she was in his room most of the day. Not much to report from a medical standpoint today.

[Image] WYTCHE1 WYTCHE1 wrote  at 10/18/2009 3:12:06 AM

LATEST UPDATE: 10/17/09 DAY 14 Scott was alert today. He is still on broad spectrum antibiotics for the pneumonia, which is improving. His fever has come down to 101.1 and his vitals are good. The bleeding has stopped since he was taken off the blood thinner. They have not yet put the filter in. At this point we don't know when that will be. He will probably have another CT scan in the next day or two, keeping an eye on the blood clots. Even though he is still hooked up to the respirator Scott is doing all the work. He raised his right arm and squeezed Debbie's hand with his left hand. He does not talk yet but when Debbie turned her head away, he moved his right foot continuously to get her attention. At the end of the day, he appeared to be resting peacefully.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/16/09 DAY 13 (LUCKY 13) Scott woke up today. He opened his eyes wide and moved his lips to gesture a kiss to his wife. Scott Jr. said "Dad I love you" and Scott smiled. Although Scott still has a fever of 102.5, his vitals are good today. He is still being assisted by a respirator but he is doing most of the work. There is bleeding from his nose and the trach tube due to the blood thinner. They have not yet put a clot filter in. They will do a CT scan later to determine how effective the blood thinner was in removing the blood clots and to see where there might be bleeding from the thinner. They will probably stop the blood thinner soon. Scott gave a thumbs up with his right hand and moved his toes on both feet. He appears aware but we don't think he understands why he is here. He gave his wife three kisses. It has been a pretty good day.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/15/09 DAY 12 Scott's vital signs show some improvement. His blood pressure is good, heart rate is still a little high but improved, his breathing is still labored but getting better. Fever is still 103. Blood thinner appears to be working, slowly. Filter will not be put in until tomorrow. Scott has not responded to any commands today.

[Image] WYTCHE1 WYTCHE1 wrote  at 10/14/2009 11:26:12 PM

LATEST UPDATE: 10/14/09 DAY 11 EVENING Although Scott is still unconscious and his brain is still swelled, he was better earlier in the day. This afternoon his breathing became very fast and labored, his blood pressure was extremely low, his heart rate was extremely fast and he developed a fever of 103. An ultrasound of his legs revealed a blood clot in each of them. A CT scan of his upper body showed a blod clot in the lung, blocking his airway. He is being given a blood thinner, which was not done originally to prevent bleeding in the brain. He is being monitored constantly to make sure this does not occur. Tomorrow they will put a filter in his groin to prevent any other blood clots from traveling into the lungs.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/14/09 DAY 11 Earlier today Scott responded to the twisting of his nipple by saying OUCH. This was good considering he is not yet conscious. They were going to do an MRI but his blood pressure is very low, his heart rate is very high and his breathing is very fast and heavy, so they opted not to. An ultra sound of Scott's legs showed two blood clots, which are being monitored. A full body CT scan is scheduled for later today to determine why his vitals are so out of whack.

UPDATE 10/13/09 DAY 10 The tracheostomy went well. Scott is still connected to a ventilator. A feeding tube has been inserted. Vitals are good. The inner cranial pressure monitor has been removed. Scott opened his eyes a few times on command.

LATEST UPDATE 10/12/09 P.M. - DAY 9 Posted 10/13/09 16 minutes ago The doctor went over the most recent CT and explained to us where the damage in the brain occured. The area of Scott's brain that has been damaged is the part which control speech/motor skills. The doctors have decided the next step forward would be to do a tracheostomy. This procedure will be done on Tuesday (10/13/09). Once the procedure is finished, the doctors are hoping to slowly reduce Scott's medications until he is stable enough to be brought to a rehabilitation center.

sorry, I don't believe in prayers anymore. it's lawyers, guns, and money that makes things move. If we are a real family of bikers that count on each other, then lets send money (if he doesn't need it or it can't help him, it will help someone close to him). BTW, I got wacked and hurt for a good 10 years. If you ride enough you'll go down and I figure I'm about due for another.
