IF YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY, PLEASE JOIN!
The biker community has long been known for it's brotherhood and loyalty, but in recent years it has been driven in a different direction and somehow lost everything it was once about.
It used to be...... you could see another person on a bike and automatically strike up a friendship. It didn't matter what kind of bike you were riding or clothes you were wearing, or even were your we born. Now it seems if you don't ride a certain bike or have $200 boots, or hang out at a certain bar, then you are not worth the time of day.
It has come to my attention in recent weeks that, in my opinion, the bike community is being divided. If some one has enough money to buy a bike and enough balls to get on it then they call themselves a biker. GET REAL! It takes heart to be a biker. It takes a loyalty to every other biker on the road, and it takes a brotherhood that means helping when help is needed. It doesn't matter what bike you ride or where you hang out, it's what's in your heart.
If you see a bike on the side of the road, you stop. If you hear of another biker in need or in trouble, you help. If you hear things that make no sense, stand by your brothers and sisters.
As if there aren't enough problems in the world today, our community has been divided by rumors and slander. The high school bullshit has never done anyone any good, that's why we leave high school and move on.
It is about putting your knees in the breeze, letting the wind warm your face, and being part of something that is a part of you. If you had to give it all up tomorrow, you would just assume die. If you have never had these feelings, then stop riding. You are a rider, you are not a biker.

You guys have said it all. I have met so many people on bikes and the majority of them have been the most genuine people I have ever met. Sure, I've met a few who are full of shit. Have animosities on what kind of bike you ride, or what you wear, were you stand in a social circle. Some people watch too much of Sons of Anarchy. I have the utmost respect for my friends who are true bikers. These are the people I trust with my life. I can't imagine life without a Harley. I had hit some pretty hard times in the past year. I had lost my job, my house, and damn near lost my truck but, I'll be damned if I'll loose my bike but, it was my "Biker " friends that helped me through it all the most. God Bless the Bikers.

I'm fairly new 2 riding but I didn't get into it 2 try 2 fit in 2 any kind of group or join any club. I did it because I've always liked bikes, the way they look, the sound they make. When I 1st bought my bike it was sort of a financial decision. I could either sink 10 or 15 grand into my old hot rod & still have a project I couldn't drive or I could buy a bike. So I bought the bike & so far I love it. Does that make me a BIKER, probably not, but that's OK with me. Cuz like I said I didn't buy it 2 fit in, I bought cuz I like 2 ride, not 2 decorate my garage with it. Those that know me would probably agree, I have the drabbest dirtiest Harley out there. But it's mine & if U want it you're gonna have 2 pry it from my cold dead hands cuz that's the only you're gonna get it. I've always been the type 2 stop & offer help when I see some 1 on the side of the road, whether they drive a car, bike or whatever. I used 2 help my friends fix their Huffys when we were kids. Am I a BIKER? If U meet me & get 2 know me U can make that call, as far as I'm concerned I'm just a guy that likes 2 ride a motorcycle.

Yeah, I remember what it was like. Been riding since I was 16, riding Harleys since I was 19. I've long felt that the Brotherhood of Fellow Bikers has taken a turn. Not even close to what it was in the 70's & 80's. None of the new "bikers" seems to have a clue as to what it all means any more. Talking to people, I hesitate to call myself a biker sometimes, because all you have to do is have a pocket full of money, plunk it down at the local Harley Dealer, pick up yer bike, yer new leather jacket & chaps, yer fingerless gloves, and ZAP, you are an Instant Biker. But there's no Heart there, no feel for the Road or other Riders. It's just an Illusion, but anyone that's for real can see through it. Just go to any event and smell the New Leather smell in the air and look at the shiny new do-dads on the pretty new bikes, it's a dead give a way.
Loan you my Bike? You gotta be shittin' me. As much time & sweat & money as I've got in my ride? My Bike is an extension of me, part of my heart and soul are in that pile of Steel & aluminum. You might as well ask to borrow my dick too, dumb ass.
Just my 2 cents worth.

But ya know what? Even though I don't have a bike any more, I still pull over when I see one on the side of the road, and I always give y'all extra room when I see you on roads & highways. I sure miss my ride...

Hmmm... such a beautiful thing. So sad that my ex let someone ride my bike who totaled it. Friends try to console me that, "It's just a possession" but a bike is way more than that. It was my fun, my memories, my weekends, my plans, my FREEDOM.

Does anyone remember the mid to late 70s? i was around 10yrs old. And @ that time we used to have about 3 family get togethers a year 2 in summer and one around christmas. Well my Aunt Suzy "the black sheep" lol used to show up with her biker friends to the family parties. Of course they got the cold shoulder...My dad telling me when i asked him about one of the guys bikes that it was very dangerous to ride. Well he really had some explaining to do when i was looking thru a family album and found his old triumph. lol i really wish i could remember their names. But eventually everybody warmed up to them. They were cooking, telling stories and helping my mother clean up after everyone was done. Well what i am trying to say is that i can count on one hand the people i have met with the character that these guys and gals represnted that summer and i never saw them again. I will never forget you.

you know, in my state we have thousands of riders bitching about discrimination towards riders, the restrictions of our freedom to choose to ride without or with helmets and we only have 2000 ABATE members with even fewer taking an active stand and working towards enhancing rider's rights. fuck all this brotherhood shit. it's all a bunch of words on a virtual page when so few folks are doing shit about it.

I have riden in clubs and also solo. Either way it's not easy being female and a biker. Las Vegas is mostly all wanna be's. Going from bar to bar with a patch on your back does not make you a biker. Sometimes a patch on your back doesn't make you a biker either. Vegas has turned into a bunch of judgemental people that don't have a clue. I would rather load up my bike and take off out of town with my husband than hang out in Vegas to "Represent", represent what that I ride? So what. Either you is or either you isn't....'nuff said.

It seems that I am one of many that agree with this. I have not read every comment on this page and I'm sure there will be many more who will comment after me. The ones I have read make me believe that the biker community is still at hart good. I have met more genuine bikers in my life then genuine people, so to speak. The time on my bike is mine and no one else can take that away. It doesn't matter if I'm alone or with 500 other bikers. I will enjoy it. I am a very helping person anyone who truely knows me will agree. Sometimes I may not be the most chairitable person, but most of the time I try to help with the things that are improtant to my friends and family. I truely believe that the biker community to be one of the best. There are some people out there that mean to break up the sprit of what riding is suppose to mean. Those are the people that ether don't last as true bikers or cause problems for the rest of us. For them I feel sorry because they will never understand what it means to me to be a biker. I love my bike and the time I've spent on it. The places I've been, the things I've seen, and the people I've met, are all things that have brought joy and happiness to my life. To those who wish to descriminate against other for the stupid things that they can, back off, we don't want you here. In my opinion it doesn't matter what you ride, with who you ride, or how long you've riden. We all have a similar joy in life and we need to share it with each other. If it weren't for time I've spent on my bike my life would not me as happy or joyful. To all those who enjoy their bike as much as I do mine. "Ride hard or go home." And good luck in the future.

Heart? Thank GOD that still exists among those that I call friends. I have found that I have no time for the wanna bes, and the establishments that just talk. Want to be a part of? Talk to some old timers that have seen more miles than the amount of dollars spent on your ride. There is a Code among bikers and it takes heart to truly be among the ranks. How many people talk about doing something for a charity but never get involved except to throw in the 20 bucks for the ride and then get pissed when they dont win the raffle? Drama and obamaism is taking over. FUCK that. Stand for something or fall for anything. How many bars make donations to the charities that they have events for? why is it that 500 bikes show up for an event but there are only 8 people on the board to organize the event? I don't think bikers are being divided, I just think that there is an attraction to ridding and people buy bikes just to try and fit in somewhere. Not that its a big deal. Those that know the wind know the difference and tolerant the wanna bes. It seems to be all about being seen. Actions speak louder than word and for the people that I know and love and actually offer help, GOD bless you. To all those "motorcycle enthusiasts" that just want to be seen and be a part of, take the time and hang with some old riders. Yeah times are changing, but I am not. I will still call it as I see it and I will put forth actions instead of words. Too bad more "bikers" dont do the same.
If you actually read all of that, then I invite you to read a copy on The Bikers Code on my main page. Justify what you wear and why you ride anyway you like, but if you want to call yourself a Biker, learn what a Biker is, then do what a biker does.

Well, most of that is said is sooo true, been ridding for 44 yrs come Dec 23..rode many states, friends I have always made, some close some not as close, but nice to have met. Many I have lost and they have gone to heaven.
I have ridden with men on the back ( as well as my own ride in the 44 yrs) who went from bar to bar... and always made sure they took care on how they rode with me in the back.. MY saying is "Why is it a biker can go from bar to bar , have a few , get on his bike ( if the idiot on the road stay where he is at) and make it home . Yet! a guy in his car goes bar to bar, has 4 wheels ,protection all the way around him, can't stay the flouck on his side of the road and most have to just shift to D." A guy biker has to balance his bike, has no protection ,shift gears and breaks, then keep en eye on lights and the idiot whose on 4 tires, cause if he goes bar to bar can't keep himself in the one lane for long..
What da flouck!!!! But lately it seems that and I think because of the power of the bikes , they have been doing some crazy stuff while drinking, where as when I use to ride at younger age the guys where more safe, more responable, with their action on a bike , hell I use to ride with them and they smoke Pakalolo Maui Wow Wee and drink beer from bar to bar.. Today it so different the weekend biker thinks differently, it's not like it use to be. Had cuz who rode a harley he was only 100 if lucky, he would start the harley. crank it to start that bike bang throw him over the bars he went, it was funny as hell..
Guys, I rode with then and even now, I was always the only women rider , best guys to hang out with, no bs , we just rode..
Had a damn good time going from bar to bar, rain, wind, fogged so thick you could only see a small red light in front of you and that was at nights too, river across the road cause it rain so hard , that when a truck pass 4 foot waves would go over you, boots water deep to the top of it lol..gawd those where the days.. aloha Liz

it seems the mentally challenged are multipling on two wheels(dont get me wrong here cause ive drank my share and made it home by riding a white line and the grace of god holding me up), biketoberfest is here and the idiots will run crazy over the streets of east coast florida, being bad ass bikers...as they pay there dues to become a biker those of you that can remember the early rides know it wasnt about bar hopping getting trashed and falling over, it was about the first kick or if you were lucky the second!lol riding in the rain the first time. or taking that special someone for a ride! Going bar to bar with a buddy for 200 miles knowing each curve he was gonna be right there.
be true to your riding and enjoy the time you have

I only go back to about '78, but I remember being told "We don't serve bikers here". I think a lot of the "brotherhood" that existed back then was a result of we had to stick together. There were no "Bike Nights", there were biker bars. The biker bars you were welcome. Just couldn't be stupid, show respect, you got respect. Show stupidity or disrespect, might of got your butt kicked. When I saw a bike on the side road, I pulled over. I didn't know how to work on anything but the BSA I was riding, but I could give a buddy push, lend a wrench, maybe moral support or a smoke. When bikes became "cool" for the masses, HD willing to throw in $1000 worth of 'motolothes' when Biff and Buffy bought a new bike, all that started to go away. They had the costume, chaps, jacket, gloves...Yep, I'm a biker now... They have an old softail in the garage, 3K miles, trailer to an event, might ride it while they're there, do the big runs in town, but they never did get it. Yep, I'm a biker... They see somebody broke down on road, "No dear, we can't help them, I'm sure they have cell phone or something, they can call HOG..." as they ride past. I pull over still, I still carry a spare pair of plugs, tools, a siphon hose to share gas. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but there are a lot less nowadays. OK off my soapbox

I have found that a true motorcyclist: you get a rush when a pack of bikes head out and you hear that rumble, or when you see Bombers doing drills in the sky, and you get that same rush. You don't have to dress like a bad ass so people know you ride. It's on your face, the grin that goes from ear to ear when your on your bike. And your ride doesn't just involve bar to bar. That my two wheel friends is a true motorcyclist. It's that inner rush!!!!!

With the things I have to do in the course of a week I am grateful to be able to ride when I can, but I truly believe that bikers are good people, I have known a lot and they are always willing to help and there when ya need em. You are right, it doesn't take a 200 dollar pair of boots to make you a biker, it IS what's in the heart and that My friends is always TRUE. My ex was a wannabe biker, he had to look good his boots polished and so on, ( Not with him anymore ) lol. I like my biker friends and if someone gives me shit about it, I usually tell em where to go, but truthfully there is something in everybody's heart about bikers, the ones that don't like us , just are jealous that they can't BE us,lol. I see it everyday and everywhere I ride. bikers have and will always stick together. 2 wheels are 2 wheels no matter what you ride. So what if I don't wear colors or smoke the same brand you do. Everyone thinks you have to be some kind of criminal to be a true biker. A true biker lives for the ride not the status.

To me it's always been about the brotherhood, a brotherhood that most people can't understand unless they've served in the military.
You learn then that guy to your left or right holds your life in his hands.
Many of the older clubs were started by returning vets.
I see at the core of a true bikers heart, trustworthiness, loyalty, and respect.
In my eyes, being a badazz that can whip old ladies in a heartbeat, or putting 60,000 miles on a bike in a year makes a biker not, to me it's always been about the brotherhood, and brotherhood is a word that some cannot understand because they have never been there, but it's pretty easy to recognize when you see it, if you know what to look for.
I read the forums here on BON a lot and "what is a biker" comes up about once every three weeks, it's always pretty comical.
EVERYBODY KNOWS you can't be a biker if you don't smoke the same cigarettes as me.

It used to be that all bikers shared a common bond, an unspoken code of ethics and behaviour that transcended words and was built on actions.
There was never a bible written on this Biker's Code and there was no need for such. But the times are a-changin' and there seems to be a lot of new riders out there. These days the riders you see blastin' down the road are just as likely to be clad in shorts and sneakers as jeans and engineer boots. And the roughest, toughest-looking biker you pull up next to could be your doctor or lawyer and may be wearin' a Rolex watch under his leathers. There's nothing wrong with that, so long as these new riders learn the Code just as we old-timers did.
Being a biker used to be about using your creativity to take a basket case old hawg and using only grit and ingenuity, turning it into a one-of-a-kind eye dazzler, then risking your life on the asphalt on a bike you made yourself out of pride. Bikers wore leather and grease because they knew cagers would just as soon run them down as look at them, so they had to be intimidating.
We were a breed unto ourselves with no union, no support group, and in many cases, no family (they threw us out). We had to make it in the world of our own, against all rules, against mainstream society, and against all odds. We survived and prospered because of the Biker Code and we never took shit from anybody. As an old scooter bro once said, "It's every tramp's job to school the young. How else are they gonna know a Panhead from a bed pan?"
With that in mind, we bring you a primer on the basic two-wheeled Code. Take heed, brothers and sisters, for our Code is a hallowed one filled with honor and loyalty, the likes of which have not been since the days of knighthood:
Don't take any shit.
Be kind to women, children and animals, but don't take any bullshit. This is an essential part of being a biker. It has to do with respect and honor. Anyone can be a quick-tempered fool. Be cool, stand tall and backup what you say with action.
Never lie, cheat or steal. Another way of saying this is to always tell the truth. Bikers are always the greasy bad guys in the movies, but every real biker knows that his word is his bond.
Your word is all you have in life that is truly yours. Guard it carefully and be something noble, for you are a true knight of the road. Don't snitch.
If you see a wrong, fight it yourself, if you are about anything. You'll take care of problems yourself and never feel the need to snitch someone off. Snitches are the lowest life forms on earth, right up there with biker thieves. Don't Whine.
Absolutely no one likes or respects a whiner. Another way to say this is hold your mud. Still another way to think of it is, "Don't sweat the small stuff" Most of life's little inconveniences work themselves out whether you whine or not. Keep your chin up, dammit!
You're a biker, not some lowly snail Never say die and never give up. Whether it's in a fight, a debate, or a business deal, no matter how bad it gets, a biker never gives up. Help others.
When a brother or sister is broken down by the side of the road, always stop and help them. Even moral support, if that is all you can give, is better than riding on by.
Remember life is about the journey, the ride, not getting there. You already are there. And don't just help bikers, show the world that we are better than our image portrays us. Courtesy costs you nothing and gives you everything.
Stick to your guns. Do what you say you'll do, be there when you say you will. This is called integrity. This also goes back to standing for something.
Like the song says, "You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything." Life is not a drill. Yeah, this ain't no dress rehearsal.
This is life -- go out and take big bites of it. You've got no time to lose and bikers don't stand around waiting for the party to come to them.
You only go around once. Tomorrow you could be road kill, thanks to a chain smoker asleep at the wheel of his Caddy.
Live life

i don't use the term "old school" that too has become way over used in all aspects. at one point, i think it meant the old style stylized navy type tattoos of girls/birds and ships. however now it means anything that existed before 1990. i prefer the term "back in the day". Back in the day when two bikers would meet, shake hands and scan each other warily............................ friend or foe they'd be thinking....... we'd be thinking. Back in the day when bikers were persecuted. Back in the day when women were just sluts putting out so they could hang with the big dogs on the porch. Back in the day when women who rode their own were as rare as a buffalo nickle. Back in the day were fights in the bars were as common as throwing a chain on a pack run. Back in the day when cages tried to kill us, intentionally and not from the oblivion of texting while driving. Back in the day when brotherhood really mattered because it was life or death.

yup... i remember when someone told me i looked like a biker (i was 12) and she meant it as an insult... i thanked her proudly... and pissed her off in the process...lol...I am old school... will always stop if i see a bike on the roadside... will even have tools or whatever (duct tape rocks..lol) to help...I am flabbergasted when i am on the roadside and bikes just pass me by... had clothing caught in my rear brake and some yahoo on a brand new harley rode by AS I TRIED TO WAVE HIM DOWN!!! wtf?? luckily.. a female rider in a car stopped and help me remove it.

funny to find this now! I JUST last week ended up talking to a biker from Tenn when she was passing through. was getting gas in the cage (long story as to why I was not on 2 wheels :( ) and saw a fellow biker alone sitting on their bike. so I spoke as I passed. when I was coming out of the store part she was going in and we ended up stopping and visiting and my poor guy bless his heart proved he as well is a biker. :) he just waited patiently for us to chat. She was riding a long way alone and it was apparent she needed someone to talk to for a few. I have done alot of solo miles and know how much that small few minutes speaking to someone else on a break helps keep me alert and safe.
we exchanged BON info and she is going to contact me when she gets back on line. :)
THAT is a biker lifestyle to me!

I have been on bikes almost all of my life. I remember when bikers were scum and now everyone wants to be us! If you had tatoos then you were trash, now everyone has to have one. Harleys were pieces of sh*t and now... Well you know the rest. We always stood together and helped one another in any situation. Now like someone else said if you are broke down along the road the next bike that rolls by will wave and keep going!! My husband and I ALWAYS stop and ask...need any help? Just because you have a $20,000 bike and all the fashion accessories on your back DOES NOT make you a biker, only a rider. You have to have lived the lifestyle to understand! I just wish we could turn back the hands of time! I realize there are still old schoolers out there but they are getting hard to find. Make yourselves known!! I also realize that there may be some riders out there who could be bikers but you need to learn Respect and learn to listen to those of us that know what it really is all about. You definetly do have to have heart to be a biker and you definetly cannot buy it. You have to be proud of who and what you are, not just one or two days a month but EVERY day!! Brother/Sisterhood means the same thing in any group or organization...being there when you are needed and always willing to lend a helping hand. Respecting each other and what others stand for!! Old schoolers UNITE and bring the lifestyle back!!!!

Boy if this isn't the truth. OSB all the way!!!!!!! Been riding sense I was a youngin and my family rode before me, it definatly is nothing like it was back in the 70's and 80's. I left the community for a while and when I came back it was nothing like it use to be!!!! But I will never change and am amazed at how many OSB are still around. It's a lifestyle not just a weekend ride!!!

I remember those days. I have been riding since 76. When I started, I was lucky enough to have a couple of guys take me under their wing and guide me. Taught me to listen, not talk. It was about brotherhood. Yeah, just because you ride, don't make you a biker, it takes heart and the last time I checked, you can't walk in anywhere and buy it!

i didn't learn from anyone in my family or circle until i got into college. i hung at a scuzzy corner biker bar, shot pool with patches and traded favors for rides. I got my own bike in 83 and started wrenching, cuz that's what we did. screw paying shop rates, wrenching was easy before harley made it impossible. I rode with patches for years and still do. i've been kicked to the curb by "friends" who now all own motorcycles. i bleed 50 weight. i ride because i'll die if i don't. i understand lots of folks can't be in this place and i'm damn glad of it.

Not everyone has family or friends who rode to learn from. All I'm saying is give the newer guys a chance. Give them an understanding mentor. You can't become a seasoned biker overnight.

I don't understand why they spend $20,000 to be "cool" one weekend every other month, and either Sturgis or Daytona so they can tell ya all about it. You all know them, they've infected us.

It's easy to discount the poser but some of them might just be new riders who are still finding their way. At 2.5 years, I still consider myself a newb and am kind of a square peg in the average biker crowd...probably many of you would call me a poser. After the first few weeks of riding, I sold my car. I love riding with a passion that is difficult to explain to non-riders. Not sure what that makes me...other than happy.

I have been riding since I was 16 and wouldnt have it any other way. I had a stroke last Nov and the need and desire to get back on my bike brought me back to good health. Riding is what it is all about no matter what you ride and if you look at mine, it is different than the most.

Well written. I started riding at age 8, have owned many types of bikes, Harley and Metric, just settled on the one I have now because it is a great dependable bike. The other bikes didn't treat me as well as this one, so they left the stable. The bike snobs can turn there heads, I can be uninvited to certain group rides now that I sold the other bike, but to me it is about the wind in my face, the rumble below me, and a trusted bike to take me away.

In 30+ years of being on two wheels, I've learned that assholes come in all shapes and sizes. A lifetime brother will sometimes roll up in a cage, and then again some dickhead will will blow by you on the side of the road with your (ex)old-lady on the back of his bike and the money he owes you in his pocket. Non-conformist so-called low-lifes can be the most honorable people you'll ever meet. Just like lots of chrome don't make you cool, you don't wear your integrity on your sleeve no matter what you ride.

We remember what it was like. Been riding since 1973. Been a bar owner since 1994. Back then, we were one of the few bars that was an actual biker bar. Back then, more bars locked their doors on us rather than welcomed us in. Biker isn't just riding a bike. It's a lifestyle.
