Here's how the Myrtle Beach mayoral candidates responded to a series of questions about the city.
Beatrice Catalano
1. What are your goals and priorities for the city?
My main project for the city will be to bring tourists back to Myrtle Beach to support our businesses and put people back to work.
2. What about the city is working well?
Nothing. Need drastic change to bring business back, bring back bikers, Shriners, church groups, shaggers, the Sun Fun and Pavilion.
3. What about the city is not working well, and how would you fix it?
Marketing, tourism, jobs, taxes [the citizens' right to vote], crime, and the way to fix these issues would be marketing, bring back the magic, let the citizens have a say-so in their community.
Bill Howard
1. What are your goals and priorities for the city?
The re-establishment of small business as a jobs incubator for our economy is important. This will also address or help address other issues, such as unemployment, redevelopment of blighted or vacant areas, and security in surrounding neighborhoods. I would also strive for inclusion and empowerment to every area of our city and work to more equitably deliver governmental services such as public safety. To be a world-class resort, we must also be a world-class place to live.
2. What about the city is working well?
Most of our city employees are dedicated and loyal public servants. Our emergency management system works extremely well, particularly the cleanup after a storm. The planning staff does a good job of guiding growth through the implementation of our comprehensive masterplan. As the current zoning re-write proceeds, care and monitoring of this process is critical from council's role as policymakers.
3. What about the city is not working well, and how would you fix it?
One person, whether mayor or council member, is not capable of "fixing" anything alone. Moving forward in any direction or any issue will require a healing process to get beyond the wounds created by the last several administrations. A mayor or council willing to empower the residents, business owners, working public and taxpayers through inclusion, attitude and a simple willingness to listen will go along way. We have to find a more equitable way to serve the entire city with services and amenities. We should encourage, in whatever means possible, the creation of small business and entrepreneurship. I believe the City Council could benefit from a complete analysis of our public safety department from an efficiency and service delivery perspective. We must do everything possible to ensure a safe environment in our homes, businesses, neighborhoods and areas frequented by our visitors. And finally, a mayor should be able to build consensus among the electorate and among council. It is only then that Myrtle Beach can truly claim its rightful place on the stage with the premier cities in S.C. and the premier resorts in the U.S.
Mark Struthers McBride
1. What are your goals and priorities for the city?
A. Support tourism;
B. no ad tax;
C. reduce crime;
D. unify the city, not just the City Council;
E. Positively promote the city with a "friendly" environment
2. What about the city is working well?
We still have visitors in spite of all the negative actions taken by the current mayor and council.
3. What about the city is not working well, and how would you fix it?
The city has been divided with the current mayor and council. If this is what the citizens believe and disagree with it, then they must elect new leadership.
Matthew McCarty
1. What are your goals and priorities for the city?
I want to continue to strongly promote tourism. I want to help bring more year-round business to the area that offers full-time jobs to our residents. I want to see to it that the current 1 percent ad tax goes on a referendum. Our citizens deserve a chance to decide on that issue for themselves. I want to develop the downtown area and the old mall site into attractions that will draw more tourism and promo

Several Myrtle Beach mayoral and city council candidates talked about biker's rights Saturday at Beer 30 Bar and Grill in Surfside Beach.
The Horry County chapter of ABATE -- a biker's rights organization -- invited mayoral candidates Mark McBride and Bill Howard, as well as city council candidates Karen Mitchell and Don Emory.
The candidates focused on bike rallies, stressing their views that the rallies need to return to the sizes of year's past -- before Myrtle Beach's new biker ordinances.
Rebecca Rowan, the coordinator for the Horry County branch of ABATE, made her case for bikers.
"We don't just stand out there and ride bikes. We work, we have our families that we have to feed. I happen to work in the city of Myrtle Beach and I know how bad Myrtle Beach is suffering," said Rowan.

There's no shortage of differing opinions, especially when it comes to the motorcycle rallies.
Among the 12 candidates for Myrtle Beach City Council, it's no different.
Some say if elected, they would actively court biker groups, hoping they come back. Others say May has finally become manageable again, and some don't take a hard-and-fast stand.
"To me, it's not about bike weeks, it's about tourism," said Karon Mitchell, local motel owner and downtown redevelopment corporation board member. "I don't believe you should ever run off any source of revenue that so many people in the service industry depend on."
Mitchell said she wishes the city had conducted economic studies and made plans to replace the lost revenue. .
Don Emery, local bar owner, got into the race because of the city's stand on the rallies, among other reasons.
"The city should have found a way to find an equitable solution," he said. "We need to apologize not only to the bikers, but to all the tourists we've offended. This isn't unique. Daytona Beach tried to get rid of the rallies, too. But with a change in leadership and an apology, I think the bikers will come back."
Several of the candidates feel an apology is in order: Emery, Pete Lusardi, Terry Mitchem, Mike Lowder and C.D. Rosza each said the city should say "sorry" or "we were too hasty," or "please come back."
"I know there are a lot of residents who don't appreciate what goes on, but this is a tourist destination," said Lowder, a local businessman who's making his third run at a council seat. "My stance is the same as it has been for the last two races. We cannot pick and choose our tourists."
"As long as we set the rules and keep everything under control, I would want the rallies back," said Rosza, a mechanic who owns a shop in Surfside Beach.
Mitchem said the city could organize events and welcome the rallies to town.
"We do it for events like the Beach Barbecue Boogie, why not for the rallies?" Mitchem said.
Lusardi said the city has given the impression that it's not a welcoming place anymore.
"It was a mistake to push away a whole segment of people," Lusardi said. "How do you separate the rallies from the bikers?"
Others, however, say they can make the distinction. They are against the rallies and the way they have impacted the city.
"They overwhelmed us and our infrastructure," said contractor Keith Compton. "We have no other weeks of the year where we have to call in hundreds of extra police officers and have city crews working untold hours of overtime to clean up after events."
The incumbents, all of whom voted for all or parts of the ordinances, say they haven't changed their minds.
"If I have any regrets, it's that some of the bikers I've met as I've gone door-to-door think the city looks down on them or thinks they are trashy," Councilman Randal Wallace said. "That's just not true. I did my best to go after the cause of the problems, not the rights of individuals."
Martino said that since the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce began spending more money on marketing the city to potential visitors within driving distance, occupancy numbers have been up over last year, and last weekend's Oktoberfest downtown shows there are alternatives to bike rallies.
Most candidates said there are events the city and chamber can promote that will draw people to the area in the shoulder months, not just May. Emery suggested a Native American festival, Gray wants to push sports tourism, and events like a Carolinas weekend and Mothers' Day celebrations, as well as expanding on last year's Military Appreciation Days festival; Compton and Lowder said the city needs to think outside the box and come up with events that can grow over the years; Martino said he advocates the city hiring a festival organizer to make sure there are events and festivals as often as feasible and relooking at the ordinance that prohibits events in May because "we've got a handle on May now - we should at least be able to do some organized activities;" and Joanne Vogelsong s

THIS IS FROM THESUNNEWS.COM LOCAL MB NEWS...ITS THE BEGINING OF CHANGE TRUST ME ITS COMING...
Biker rallies drive mayoral race in Myrtle Beach
Candidates defend, criticize city's attempts to cut down on chaos
Beach City Council is destined to be linked with motorcycle rallies forever.
Even though the council's 14 rally-quelling ordinances passed more than a year ago - and four rallies have come and gone since - the controversy hasn't died down at all.
It's the reason some of the people running for city office this year got into the race.
Even those who have other reasons for wanting seats on the council have strong opinions about the city's actions and the rallies themselves.
Some would have taken no steps at all, some would have taken different steps, and one wouldn't change his vote.
Mayor John Rhodes, who seeks re-election this fall, said the timing of the city's actions might not have been good because the efforts to control the rallies dovetailed with the economic downturn. But he thinks the issue still would have generated controversy because, "It's change. Change frightens people because it means dealing with the unknown."
He and the council have been criticized for bowing to "a small group of people with a lot of money," but Rhodes said when he looked at the people complaining about the rallies year after year, "I saw the people who built Myrtle Beach, the people who have helped it grow into what it has become, and I saw them being unable to enjoy their quality of life."
For Rhodes, it's time to move forward.
"It's not about whether we, the council, could have done things differently, it's about whether we the city, the bikers, the business community - everyone - could have done things differently. But we're working with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce to come up with ways to replace that business and enhance all the shoulder months," Rhodes said.
Some candidates think the city needs to reverse its stance, apologize to bikers and invite them back.
"I'm for the rallies," said candidate Matthew McCarty. "I understand that some families felt overwhelmed, and I respect that, but I think it's a horrible, horrible idea to ever tell any group of people they aren't welcome here. ... The council didn't do anything wrong - it did what was right for the residents. But there's more to the city than just residents."
He said he thinks a good portion of the bikers who avoided the Grand Strand this year would come back "if the city would admit this wasn't the best idea, say 'we're sorry, please come back, we need you.'"
Candidate Bea Catalano also thinks the city owes an apology.
"I think we should invite them back and give them the keys to the city," she said. "A lot of businesses lost a lot of money, and so did I. Some of the bikers bought houses from me. I think we could plan a way to do this that would bring them back and try to please everyone."
Catalano said she would pull together a task force from the north and south ends of the city, from the business community and residents, and "have a meeting of the minds. We've got to bring back the magic. We're a resort."
Businessman Bill Howard, also a challenger for the mayor's seat, said he wants to know what the council was thinking when it took a stance against the rallies.
"They created a tidal wave. The message 'we don't want you' spread like wildfire across the Southeast," he said. "Most of the laws were on the books already. They could have quietly passed a few more, enforced them slowly over the years, and no one would have ever known what was happening. We wouldn't have lost quality tourists, and we could have controlled the rallies.
Howard said he doesn't think the city "meant to run off all the tourists," but now it's too late. "We're going to have to try to build up quality tourism again. That's why we need a quality mayor and a quality council with business sense."
Former Mayor Mark McBride, who wants to regain the seat he lost to Rhodes in 2005, said he supports a five-day, city-sponsored rally.

I've been going there since the 70's and was always made to feel unwelcome and harassed by the local law enforcement. There has always been a double standard in Myrtle Beach. One set of rules for Bikers, and another for everyone else. I don't miss Myrtle Beach one bit.....just my 2 cents

I'VE NOTICED.. WHERE ARE THE TRAFFIC STOPS???? THEY MADE SURE THERE WERE PLENTY 4-5 DURING THE BIKE RALLY..HOW COME THERE ARE NONE NOW?? ALSO HOW BOUT THE RULES ABOUT NOBODY UNDER THE AGE OF 18 RENTING HOTEL ROOMS?? YET THERE SURE WERE ALOT OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS HERE JUST A COUPLE WKS AGO.. AND IM SURE THEY WEREN'T IN THEIR HOTEL ROOMS AT 11 PM. JUST GOES TO SHOW YA.. HOW MUCH A DOUBLE STANDARD IS GOING ON IN THIS TOWN.. I WORK IN THE CITY.. AND I REFUSE TO RIDE MY BIKE OR SHOP OR EAT IN THE CITY. I'LL DRIVE A FEW EXTRA MILES AND SPEND MY MONEY OUTSIDE THE CITY LIMITS.

What does it tell you when they hold a thank you luncheon from 11:30am - 2pm on a Wednesday??? It's obvious, the average working man/biker is too busy busting there ass to make a living and cannot afford to take time off in the middle of the week to go and protest against Rhodes and his little nose sniffers and that is why they chose to do it then. I am going to try my best to get down there and take a look at how many people actually show up for this and hopefully I will see more people protesting against these idiots!!

Hey Chicken - I got the following email about that support party:
From: Mike McDonald
To: Mike McDonald
Sent: Friday, May 29, 2009 11:51 AM
Subject: Non Support Party
To All
If you believe that MB is in good shape with the new taxes and laws which have prompted 4 law suits against the City and 1 against the Chamber then do nothing. The residents and locals, the businesses, the tourists all have a stake in and own part of MB. If however you believe the many taxes passed put you at a competitive disadvantage, if you believe the laws passed have decimated your customer base then I would suggest you attend this function and let these people know where you stand. Ask yourself this question. What is more important then our future here with is what is at stake. Together we can get ride of the people that are ruining MB and take back our City. We can be the Pride of the Mid Atlantic. Go BOOST...Go HELP....GO regular people the backbone of society. IT IS TIME TO STAND...
Be well and hope to see you there Bird
YOU ARE INVITED!!!
In recognition of their extraordinary efforts to:
- improve the QUALITY OF LIFE of the citizens of Myrtle Beach during the
month of May, and to
- restore the reputation of Myrtle Beach as a FAMILY VACATION DESTINATION
The TAKE BACK MAY committee is sponsoring a FREE BARBEQUE LUNCH and THANK
YOU RALLY for our:
Mayor JOHN RHODES
and
City Council Members
Michael Chestnut
Wayne Gray
Chuck Martino
Susan Grissom Means
Phil Render
Randall Wallace
Where: Myrtle Beach Train Depot
When: Wednesday, June 10
Time: 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Cost: FREE!!!
Our city leadership took a bold stand to reclaim our reputation and
quality of life. For that they have been assailed by the press and by the
few that profit from "tourism at any cost".
If you believe that:
We can do better than "tourism at any cost."
We should not tolerate events that dramatically degrade our quality of life.
Our reputation as a FAMILY BEACH is important and should be preserved.
Then you are invited!!!
Please come and bring your family. Let's show our leaders that we the
citizens are behind them!!!
Also please be sure to forward this invitation to all of your like minded
friends!!!

Changes will be coming to Myrtle Beach soon and everyones support is needed. We really need to get these idiots out of here. Hopefully, since the Mayor won't step down he'll be thrown out of office. I understand that 4 of the city councilmen are up for relection this year, guaranteed not to win. With everyone's support especially from the people that live inside Myrtle Beach city limits they can force the other council members to step down. Myrtle Beach is a ghost town compared to a year ago, it use to take almost an hour to get down 501 from Conway to Myrtle Beach ... now you can do it within 15 minutes.

Here is something just sent to me by a local BONer that I thought was very interesting and I think many of you would as well.
Everyone's pretty well aware of all the anti-biker ordinances set forth in M=
yrtle Beach now - helmet law inside city limits is the big one - city law ov=
erridng a state law which is unconstitutional.=A0 This past spring rally had=
bikers completely avoiding the city limits all together, causing local busi=
nesses to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in revue.
=A0
So Mayor Rhodes has had an interesting week - have a couple of buddies with=20=
the beach Sheriff's Dept (we covered their charity poker run every year) - t=
hey just called and shared some info with me:
=A0
Tuesday morning - the Mayor woke up to 2 huge gallon drums of horse shit dum=
ped on his lawn.
=A0
Wednesday night - an angry motel owner entered a restaurant where the mayor=20=
and his wife were having dinner and threw his empty registry book at the may=
or's plate, knocking it to the floor, while loudly telling everyone in the p=
lace that the motel that's been in his family for 30 years will now probably=
have to close, thanks to the Mayor and the City Council.
=A0
Friday night - the Mayor and his wife attempted to have dinner at Pier 14 -=20=
the owner came out, refused them service, and asked them to leave his restau=
rant.
=A0
This past Monday - the Mayor has now hired a full-time bodyguard...at the ci=
ty's expense, of course.
=A0
And now for the cherry on top of the sundae - check out the video below of t=
he Mayor's daughter drunk & fighting in Charleston....there's a comment belo=
w supposedly from someone in the Mayor's office that the girl in the video i=
s not his daughter, but according to my sources, it most certainly is >;-) a=
nd she's had issues with local police in MB too - always adding the line "do=
n't you know who i am?"

I'm saying that if you want to to win this battle then you need to get all the area around the city on your side and the way you do that is not spend any money in or around MB. Then and only then will the whole area work with you to get things back to normal. Money talks and bull shit walks.

Screw Myrtle Bitch. I hope they have to start selling sweet grass baskets to make ends meet. My wife and I were offered a place to stay during Biktoberfest so we will be returning that weekend. I do not se us going to Bike Week at all next year. It seemed shittier this year with all the Bull MB was putting everyone through. I find it odd too that some of the council members are not even residents of MB city limits. Or so I've heard. Correct me if I'm wrong. Many jurisdictions require you to be a resident of the area you represent. As I'm not a resident I can't vote for the council members or mayor, but I sure as hell support any effort to vote those boneheads out!

I haven't spent 1 cent in the MB city limits since all this BS started. I feel bad for the businesses there but I cannot support a city that let's this happen. Maybe all those council members and the mayor will be voted out and things will change. I talked to a vendor in NMB who sell Big Dog Choppers. All the bike venders were gettin ticketed if the sold a bike after paying $15,000 for the vender fee. Apparently it's always been a law that only bike manufacturers can sell bikes on site, not local vendors. But it was never enforced. This year it was. Bike venders were packing up and going home and will not be returning next year.

well when the ppl who moved here from the northern states because of the low taxes, start getting their taxes raised even more than they got last fall when all this bs started, maybe then they will cry and beg the Harley Riders to come back to their town and maybe then they will help get rid of the idiots MB has in office, I work in the city and other than going to and from work, I dont spend $$ or ride my bike in there. I feel bad for the business's but until they all get together and STOP and oust the current Mayor and Council, they and the citizens have nobody to blame but themselves.

I agree with the assessment about the second week being the final straw. But, if it was just the second bike week why have the last 6 years been hell on us during the first bike week? Loud pipe ticket fines went through the roof, check points next to hotels, being pulled for no reason other than looking too biker or in the federal database for visiting a certain hotel or two. All of this has happened to me only in Myrtle Beach. The second week was just a convenient way for Rhodes to get rid of all bikers. If it was just the second week none of these towns would let them do it. Atlantic Beach welcomes them (why I don't know) every year. I agree about the violence and stupidity and the drug wars are too much to deal with in any setting but we (first week bikers) were singled out way before those stupid fucking kids started to act up. The second week stupidity just gave them the ammo they needed to get rid of all bikers. Those who live in the area need to do all they can to help get rid of the that POS mayor. The rest of us will do our part and only visit those towns that welcome us. That said why did the counties impose restrictions on vendors? Are they sympathetic to Myrtle Beach?
