Introduction:
Update 8/13/08
It's been just over two months since the accident. I think I could see the light at the end of the tunnel(I hope it isin't that Honda Accord again! LOL!) Myself and the family just returned from our week away in Cape May, as usual, we had a great time taking in some sun and alcohol.
As far as my health goes, I've been going to Physical Therapy several times a week as well as seeing a Chiropractor to attempt to alleviate the spasms in my neck and lower back. So far, so good. I have felt some measurable relief in both areas, hopefully I'll get to return to work soon because as I improve, my financial situation is becoming critical.
I'll keep this short because the last thing I want to be accused of is long-winded!
Special thanks to all of you who have kept myself and my family in your prayers, thoughts and words!
Update 8/1/08
I'm in good spirits and making more progress. Since I last wrote, I have seen a Orthopedic who perscribed some Anti-inflammatory pills and muscle relaxers. In addition to an MRI, I also took some tests to see how well my nerves are reacting to stimuli. The results showed that I have nerve damage as well as some Arthritis in my back, we both agreed that the arthritis was probably there long before the accident, thanks to 21 years of construction. I have been dealing with spasms in both my neck and my lower back, which showed in the MRI when the tech noticed that I have "straightening" in my neck, due to the tightening of the muscles in my neck. On one particular Wednesday, after a dentist appointment, I went directly to the ER to have my neck checked because the spasms were so bad.
As of this week, I have started going to Physical Therapy. I've seen the therapist two times this week. My neck felt much better for the two days following the first session, then it started to tighten up again. The therapist feels that I will benefit from the sessions. I sure hope so.
In the meantime...I started weightlifting again. I've been feeling a lot better and weightlifting has always been in my life, so I decided to get back to lifting once again. Of course I started lifting with very light weight and higher repetitions, doing isolation movements so I don't strain my back or neck, so far so good. I feel better already. The therapist knows all about it and told me that there is no reason why I can't lift as long as I stick to the limited routine.
So, in a nutshell I suppose I am getting better slowly but surely. The broken bone in my back did not show up in the tests, which tells us that it has healed just fine. I'm left to deal with the spasms in my neck and back, hopefully after a few more weeks of PT, they will begin to alleviate the problem and I can get back to work. I don't want to get into money woes in this letter, but I can assure they are mounting....quickly.
As for now, I'm going to concentrate on our vacation in Cape May. We have been going there for the past three years and I'm not going to sit this year out, besides, this trip was booked last year. I may not be able to ride the waves but I'm going to enjoy the beach, my family and some cold alcoholic beverages!
See Y'all in a week!
Update 7/22/08
Had an appt. with an orthopedic today, because I have been experiencing problems with my neck and the progress on my back has seemed to have leveled off. He is sending me for an MRI and began testing my nerves to determine what is causing the symptoms. Through a conversation with my lawyer I found out that my primary insurance no longer wants to pay for claims related to the accident, they feel the motorcycle and auto insurance should cover the expenses, also the driver of the car that hit me has the absolute minimum amount of liability coverage, so the unpaid bills will be piling up now.
The reality is...I have injuries that are not going away, my summer with my family has been robbed from me, I have been dealing with my injuries, my bike is gone and I cannot afford another one, and a rising dollar amount of bills is growing with little money coming in until I can get back to work.
Sorry about the gloomy update, but it's my reality.
Update 7/17/08
Went to the dentist yesterday and got my new bridge installed! They look pretty damn good. It feels great to have a full set of teeth once again!!
Update 7/9/08
Well, it's been over a month since the accident. I had a follow up with my Doctor and he told me that I am recovering as scheduled. My roadrash is closed up and free from infection and my ribs are healing just fine. He reassured me that the broken bone in my back would take 8 full weeks to recover, that means an additional 4 weeks! One unexpected bump in the road happened earlier this week when I weened myself off Oxycodone and on to Advil, I started to go through withdrawal symptoms...Not FUN folks! My heart goes out to anyone dealing with this. Other good news....I should have my new teeth in a week! I can start smiling again, either that or I'll just move to the deep south and hook-up with my Cousin(did I just say that?)
I'm keeping my head up and staying positive. Looks like I won't be able to ride again until next season.
Older News:
It was Sunday, June 8th and I had just finished a Charity Run in South Jersey. Myself, and two friends were heading North on the Garden State Parkway. Jim(jim0628), Bill(not a B.O.N. member) and myself were in the left lane doing under 60 MPH. I was struck in the rear by a Passenger Car, I was thrown from my bike and landed on the hood of the car, then onto the windshield. Ultimately I ended being runover by the vehicle as well. I was put into an ambulance and driven to a nearby Hospital, then air-lifted to Atlanticare in Atlantic City. I spent 10 days there recovering from my injuries, which included a Concussion, Fractured Nose and Three Fractured Ribs. A Broken Bone in the lumbar section of my back. I lost a tooth and had a fair share Road-Rash. I was reminded just how lucky I am to be alive. Most wonder how unlikely it is that my injuries weren't more severe, not to mention...to be alive.
I am home now and pretty comfortable, I am on my way to a 100 percent recovery.
I need to thank all of the wonderful people I've met here on Bikerornot for supporting me and my family through this. It was all the visits to the Hospital and to my Home that matter. It's all the messages I've received, posts on my wall, calls on the phone, flowers and cards to the house that help me along. I can't say enough for the compassion I've experienced from the biker world.
I want to say a special thanks to my riding buddies....Jim and Bill, who were with me that day and never let me out of their care.
But most of all...Highest accolades go out to my loving Wife Debbie, who, at ANY time in the Hospital, I could turn my head to the right and see her in my vision. She never left my side for 10 days of medication, treatment, injections, tests, feeding and PT. She is an Angel On Earth! I Love You Debbie!!!!!!
I WILL recover! I WILL ride again! See you on the road....soon!!!!
I'm a NYC Union Carpenter, I work with my hands building, creating and fabricating. I'm a everyday kinda guy. Married with Children. I love the escape riding on my Shadow Spirit brings me. I listen to lots of music, mostly Hardcore. I enjoy Weightlifting(gotta stay in shape, I'm not getting any younger). If you have something cool to tell me I'd like to hear from you.

About Me:
I've been married for over 16 years with two wonderful children and an amazing wife. I believe in keeping things simple, sometimes less is more. I'm lucky enough to be able to put food on the table by using my hands to earn a paycheck(I'm a NY Union Carpenter). I try not to take life too serious because I know it can all come to an end in a blink of an eye. I love my Family and my most precious posession is my life.
