Introduction:
Following on the wheels of a huge success last year, the Roar on the Shore bike rally will be back and better than ever in summer 2008. From celebrities to nationally known musical acts, the event is planned for July 17 20, 2008.
Details about the four-day event were released today at a press conference with the Roar on the Shore Board of Directors, Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott and Richard Brzuz, administrator of the Erie Shriners Hospital for Children.
Last year, we held the first annual Roar on the Shore motorcycle rally and drew more than 10,000 people to the shores of Lake Erie, said Seth Tuttle, chairman of the Roar on the Shore Board of Directors. This year, we are planning to more than double that number and intend on putting on a rally the likes of which we have never seen in Erie.
After the phenomenal success of the Roar event last year, a 501 (c) (3) organization was formed to plan, promote and market the rally. When we saw how many motorcyclists we attracted last year, we knew we had a real winner on our hands, Tuttle continued.
But the event has more to do with motorcycles and leather the real reason for the rally is to raise funds for a local charity.
In 2007, the event raised more than $52,000 for the John Kanzius Cancer Research Fund. This year, Roar on the Shore proceeds will go to the Erie Shriners Hospital for Children. With so many extremely worthwhile charities in the Erie area, it was very difficult for the Board to choose just one, Tuttle noted. But anyone who knows anything about the Shriners and the amazing work they do, will agree we made a great selection.
We are honored that the Board of Directors has selected the Erie Shriners Hospital to be the recipient of this years Roar on the Shore proceeds, said Richard Brzuz, hospital administrator. These funds will be used to provide clinical care to the nearly 9,000 children who are treated annually at our hospital. It is exciting to be part of this popular event.
The main hub of activity for the event will be Perry Square in downtown Erie with local, regional and national musical acts performing on the main stage. In addition, there will be merchandise and food vendors throughout the Square. Saturday night will bring a headline concert with a national act to the Liberty Park/Pepsi Amphitheater stage.
Also appearing will be Michele Smith, host of the Speed Channels American Thunder show. Ms. Smith will be the mistress of ceremonies for the Roar on the Shore bike contest. Some in the motorcycling industry have dubbed her an American motorcycle icon and the first lady of motorcycling.
Another motorcycling celebrity will bring a century-old stunt, with a modern twist, to the streets of Erie. Rhett Rotten, the self-described Intimidator of Death, will bring his Wall of Death stunt show to Perry Square. A regular attraction at motorcycle rallies all over the country, Rotten defies gravity by riding his motorcycle inside a wall of death barrel. He will be performing throughout the weekend.
Erie Mayor Joe Sinnott, who will lead Thunder on the Isle: The Mayors Ride, is excited that the rally is coming back. We hope that bikers will begin to arrive days in advance of the rally so that they can experience spectacular scenic rides and visit our museums, playhouse, theaters, waterfront attractions, the beautiful beaches of Presque Isle, and of course the wonderful people, said Sinnott.
