Introduction:
I am 41 yrs old, divorced 4 yrs, 2 boys ages 15 and 10. Love to travel, ride my motorcycle, live music, dancing, hanging out with friends and anything that has to do with water and being outdoors. Life's an adventure!!!
Here is a little blog about my first poker run 8-19-2007..(as a driver instead of a rider..thought I would share it...)
Took my first poker run today. Found out about it last night from a friend (Lisa), It was a memorial ride for a boy that was killed on a 4 wheeler 2 yrs ago. He was 21. They set up a scholarship fund in his name. We started out in Jackson at the Corner Pub with 57 bikes...what an impressive site!
I wish i would have felt a little better (being that i was sleep deprived, dehydrated and a bit hungover) We then rode the back roads to laurelville and stopped at a convenient store. I was impressed that all the of stops were not bar related. I mean dont get me wrong, but stopping at bars leads to drinking and drinking and motorcycles as we all know do not mix. I can't imagine drinking on my bike. Hell i have a hard enough time focusing without being impaired on it. Maybe my bike is a good thing for me..keeps me from drinking.
Our 2nd stop was old man's cave. Instead of drawing poker cards we were issued tickets for raffle drawings at each stop. Those were donated from local businesses. I was still kinda shakey basically from being dehydrated and from not having anything to eat. We then rode rt 56, one curvy scary ass road! I was petrified and im sure it showed. There were 2 curves i about dumped my bike. One was gravel related the other came from be just not paying attention to the curve, taking it a bit fast and improper leaning. What scared me the most and one of the first things they teach u in the motorcycle course is NEVER put ur foot down while going at a high rate of speed. I violated that code. I as VERY lucky that it didnt rip my leg off....felt totally stupid and was sick to my stomach..not to mention that i had to pee like a russian race horse! lol
The last stop for me was lake hope. I had lisa take a picture of me but she didn't push the button down fully and it didn't take. So needless to say i dont have any pics of my first poker run! I hate that. I wish I would have been able to finish the ride back to the pub but I had to go pickup my boys before 5 pm.
By the time i took my bike back out to my moms, i was totally exhausted. I had put over 150 miles on my bike today...what a rush...oh yea and what a sore ass! LOL. I did get a really cool t-shirt (had to buy it...didn't win any of the door prizes) I wore my purple lightining dew rag (my boys said omg mom u look like bret michaels from poison..i had to laugh cause i really did look like him with my shades on..LOL) I will have to say today was one of the things that I had promised myself I would do. Just wish I could find a riding partner to ride full time with. Much more fun riding with a pack of people than riding alone. Although dont get me wrong, sometimes its just nice to ride alone and think. Thats one think i think i really enjoy about riding, it's like when i mow the grass...i get alot of thinking time...i think i needed that today.
I look forward to riding another poker run again. This one was really well organized and the family that put it on took all kinds of precautions for the safety of the riders. Just thought I would share some thoughts on how i spent my sunday afternoon. Thanks Lisa and Dale for including me today! |
