Growing old is not for whimps..... This was sent to me by a friend/sista....Thanks Diane! A little something I wrote that pretty much sums up my feelings on riding. It was inspired by my perfect ride yesterday with one of my oldest riding Brothers, Doc... The Backseat As I have gotten older, I've been priviledged enough to enjoy and view life from the backset of a scoot, just like I did when I was younger.... And it suddenly dawned on me that I indeed, have the best view of life from my little throne. From the moment you balance the bike and move forward so I can sling my long legs over the back and settle in, I can feel a wave of stress begin to leave my weary mind. As you fire up your sweet baby and she begins to purr rhythmically between our loins, I eagerly reach around your waist and hold on tight.... in anticipation of the real living I am about to experience , yet once again. Off we go; not knowing our destination and not caring. The air is crisp and the sky is so blue and clear you can almost see the Heavens. We build up speed as you throttle daringly into each curve. I lean into your strong back and can feel you breath as my heart beats into you as we fly. I close my eyes at points as I let the wind gently tear across my skin. The warmth and beauty of the sun seemingly shining only for us; for THIS ride. I open my eyes and have a smile etched into my face... a can feel LIFE.... You slow down as we reach the top of the world, walking your baby happily back and forth across the lane, as we view the world together. You reach for my hand around your waist and gently squeeze it; letting your hand linger there with mine for just an extra moment... we are one with the universe, if only for a moment. No worries, no expectations, just LIFE and living the way things were meant to be. You make me feel safe, secure, understood, accepted, loved and most importantly... FREE! You know, I use to believe that I would never live my life taking a backseat to anyone or anything; But I find that I am quite content and happy, experiencing life from... UNDER THE LEATHER AND BEHIND THE SHADES
Under the leather and behind the shades stands a biker. We ride for the sense of freedom it gives us. The encouragement to take the road less traveled in the chance that we may encounter something new. We ride for the friendships we make along the way, as well as, the solitude of the open road. We don’t really care what you ride, just that you do.
Under the leather and behind the shades is a beating heart. A heart filled with compassion that on any given day will be riding for those in need. Ask one of us for help, but don’t be surprised when all of us show up.
Under the leather and behind the shades stands a proud American. We are as diverse a group of people that you could possibly assemble. We are men, women, tradesmen, doctors, lawyers, retirees, military, civilian and on and on and on. We stand silently with reverence and one voice that, in the silence, can be overwhelming.
Under the leather and behind the shades stands an invited guest to the funeral of a soldier that we most likely have never met. We hold the flag of our nation as a tribute to the greatest sacrifice anyone can make. Out of respect for the fallen, we travel to stand firm for a family, a community and a nation to lean on.
Under the leather and behind the shades stands a biker with sons, daughters, brothers and sisters of our own. Beneath the rough exterior we tremble and weep at your loss. You may not see that, for we are there to support you. That’s why we stand so silently under the leather and behind the shades.
