A HARLEY STORY

One of the best things that has happened to me since I started riding is the friends I’ve made. These have come from many different sources. Some are folks I knew from work or from online that rode long before I did and would always tell me how much they enjoyed riding. Others are folks that I’ve met as I have went on rides and attended events such as bike nights or benefits. Just meeting up at local hangouts and taking off on rides with folks expands the group. Practically everyone I’ve ever met on a ride has greeted me warmly the next time we ran across each other at the next thing that came up.

Of course, the best place to hang out and meet up with other riders is the local bars where bikers hang out. The first place I started hanging out was The OLD HOUSTON Icehouse in Porter. Every time I would go there I’d find hundreds of likeminded folks, some of them were rough, some were newbie’s (wannabie’s) but they were all glad to be there and didn’t seem to have a problem in the world. There were certainly groups with particular colors and club stuff going for them that were perhaps a bit more reserved, but even they showed respect for others if it was extended to them.

It got to where I was spending most of my free evenings hanging out with my new found friends. I had my time when my son went down and totaled my bike breaking his back, I had some of these very same folks standing right there for me , they got my bike home for me, they helped me get through my ordeal with insurance. I found other places to ride to from time to time, some became hangouts and others just didn’t match for me. I always returned home though to where I knew I belonged. It’s good to have a place where everyone knows your name.

The gang I ride with round town and to some rallies, Mac Daddy (Grand Father), Deb (chz) his wife, Mark and Dina, Steve, and Nora, (Norba), Les and Kat, Eric, Allen, Tommy (the ladies man), Jerry (joker), Ed (captain), Jason, are just a few of loved people that without I would not survive. And The CRAZY BITCH Katina (Sissy), the one that disappears for days at a time but soooo loved when she around!
MOFO (The mad rider), Denis (Mr. Knowledge) may you RIP MY Brothers, ride the sky for I will see you when time has come.

I have seen places close over the last few years and I’ve seen new ones open up. I rode out to Sturgis, Kentucky in July for a bike rally. It’s a nice place. It was the first time I have been to a rally out of Texas, it was quite a bit smaller than the ones I am use to but the people there were so much fun and non-judgmental, I will go there again and look forward to fun and excitement all around.

Remember that sometimes we lose things other than just our friends. Sometimes we lose the places that allow us to be who we are. I’m not saying you should mail a check to your local watering hole with a thank you note or anything but remember to get out there. Go do a little economic recovery of your own, even if it’s just one longneck at a time.
